KATHRYN'S RECENT READS 2014
Woah! For almost 2 months, in between my reviews, I surprisingly read 8 books. I know it’s kinda not healthy because I should focus on exam rather on these books but can’t help it. I’m addicted. Lolz. So here, a full new list of books for you!
25/50: The Truth About Forever by Sarah Dessen
★★★★★ —Highly Recommended! ✔
This is my second Sarah Dessen book. In this book, there are so many feels! I ship Macy & Wes so hard that I love the last 2 chapters so much. And not to mention the whole Wish catering pack! I can’t even handle my love for Delia’s love for chaos, Kristy’s beautiful scars, Bert and his Bertmobile and of course, Monica’s monotone. How I wish I belong to the group! Hey, I have a lot of flaws. I belong! So all in all, this book taught me a lot of things about chaos and imperfection; about how life could be both short and long; and of course, about forever.
26/50: Sharp Objects by Gillian Flynn
★★★★ —Highly Recommended! ✔
This book is nasty, disturbing and twisted. I can’t say further more. All this teeth-pulling, skin-cutting and poisoning thing — you’ve got to read them yourself. Oh by the way, Ms. Gillian Flynn, I love Adora’s name. It’s way too creepy. And Richard Willis? I imagine a gorgeous detective. Why not. And Amma, oh my freakin’ kid. I love Camille Preaker, honestly. Read this near the bathroom, in case you vomit.
27/50: LoveStruck, Sexy Edition by Ronald Molmisa
★★★★★ —Highly Recommended! ✔
After two books about love from Ronald Molmisa, this book is whole way different. It seems like his books evolved from book 1 to 2 and now, in 3. It will teach you how to resist temptation towards intimacy, how to avoid pre-marital sex and how to stay pure until you’re married. Ronald Molmisa always enlightens me.
28/50: This is What Happy Looks Like by Jennifer E. Smith
★★★ ½ — Recommended! ✔
This is just simply a feel-good book. No evil villains, psychotic people, paranormal activities, weird situations, heavy dramas or hideous crimes. This is what happy looks like. I liked the story, to be perfectly honest. I imagine Graham Larkin as the drop-dead gorgeous matinee idol and Ellie O’Neill as the bubbly and pretty ice cream vendor. I like their humor and how they started their conversation with the wrong e-mail address and Wilbur, the pig. Anyhow, let me just tell you that I’m kind of frustrated with the 4th of July scene. It’s not enough. Seriously. I need more of them that day. It’s like you know you’ll reach the climax but you didn’t feel it. Maybe if Smith took time to improve that particular part, I’ll give this book a five.
29/50: Slammed by Colleen Hoover (Slammed #1)
★★★ ½ — Recommended! ✔
My second series of Colleen Hoover. And she didn’t disappoint me. This book has too many feels. As in a lot. And its big twist is so exciting. I didn’t even realized it will happen. And I was like, ‘So that’s what the teaser is all about’. But honestly, I love its story line. Really. I keep on thinking about Layken & Will’s scenes because it makes my heart flutter. And oh I love Eddie so much! Why do I always have a thing for best friends of main characters huh! However, I find the events in this book so fast — like everything is in rush.
30/50: Point of Retreat by Colleen Hoover (Slammed #2)
★★★★ — Recommended! ✔
This sequel is butterflying better than the first book! Everything about this book is perfect. I know that this seems too much or it seems exaggerated but I just love how human the characters were — how they showed their weaknesses and flaws. And how real it is. I guess, exciting love stories are not all about “You and Me Against the World”, but it’s also about “You and Me Against Each Other but still, I Love You”. Plus, I love Kiersten so much! And the unexpected ending, ugh!
31/50: Unwritten Rule by Elizabeth Scott
★★½ — Not Recommended, sorry ✕
Very fast-paced and I don’t know. I like Sarah so much. And Brianna is too annoying. And Ryan is stupid. Really. How could you date the best friend of the girl you really like? I call that stupidity. Sorry, but this book is overrated.
32/50: We Were Liars by E. Lockhart
★★★★★ — Highly Recommended! ✔
Alright, I read this book for Bookish Pinoys Read-Along and really, I enjoyed this book so much!!!
I declare: This is one of my best reads this year. The first two parts were somehow boring. I thought I would never enjoy the book because I don’t seem to catch up on E. Lockhart’s writing style. Then came the accident that confused me more and made the rest of the book interesting. I found myself searching for answers. Everytime someone appears in the scene, there’s something weird. So as Cadence narrates the story, I began asking questions the same way she does. Lastly, the ending. I’ll repeat, THE ENDING. It’s worth reading. It was unexpected and I never did thought that E. Lockhart would break my heart that way. So, congratulations, E. Lockhart, you surprised me. You did.
There, I hoped these quick reviews could help you in some ways. Happy reading, my bookish friends!
